14, 2018 in Perris, California, United States, David and Louise Turpin arrested
for unlawfully imprisoned their thirteen children (age from 2 to 29) in their

cell phone to call 9-1-1. The police came and found some of the children
shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in a dark, foul-smelling room,
all of them are malnutrition. So how come nobody knew about those children’s

people’s suspicions about homeschooling and its’ risk. So what exactly is

2.1 Back
ground information about homeschooling

The concept
behind homeschooling is actually not complicate at all. It means that children
education responsibility is totally on their parents as they do not want to
send their kids to a tuition. In more details, this means that the home become
children’s education center, not any school. Their educator will be their
parents or sometime their private tutors. The parents choose education path for
their children due to their interest, personality and gift, which is completely
different from institutional schools where the kids forced to follow a
curriculum designed by people who will never understand them as thoughtfully.

This form of
education is largely applied in western society where adult do believe that the
right to educate their children is their responsibility rather than the
government. According to Dr. Heather W. Allen’s statistic, the USA has the
highest number of homeschoolers with over two million home educated children.
Come after that is the United Kingdom (100,000) and Canada (95,000) followed by
Australia (55,000). Keep putting the data into order, we shall have the number
of homeschoolers in New Zealand (6,000), South Africa (5,000), and South Korea
(1,000). These country all have an upward trend which in the future can prove
that home education is actually a practical education choice. Other countries
which also have been legalize home education seem fairly modest with Japan
(800), Germany (600), France and Taiwan (both at 500), and Ireland (400).
However, the number of homeschoolers in these country is likely to rise. And
last, Netherlands, Brazil, Kenya, Poland, Ukraine, Switzerland, and Bulgaria
each of them are having less than 100 homeschoolers.

2.2
Advantages of Homeschooling.

Apparently,
since it appeared, homeschooling has become more and more popular as there is
an upward trend in the number of people who decide to home-educate their
children and the number of nations which legalize it. This show no doubt that
homeschooling is actually work and very auspicious with a lot of advantages for
children. Each parent before deciding to home-educate their children have
thought meticulously about the benefits from both academic aspect and life
style aspect.

In the USA,
when compare SAT scores of homeschooler with the national average, we see that homeschooled
children averaged 568 on the verbal test and 525 on the math; the national
average was 506 on verbal and 514 on math. This number doesn’t express that
home education is the superlative way but it does show that homeschooling has
it academic strength. First of all is the flexible curriculum which designed by
parents based on their children’s own personality and capability. Parents can decide how much the child
can learn, when to move to the next stage or when to pause. Also, each child
has different learning style so it will be easier for them to learn not being
force by a general standard of how and what to learn. As their education is controlled
by the same person during the whole period, the consistency will be more guaranteed.
Their whole process of learning, their experience is tracked and deeply
understand by their parents so there will be no difficult to design their
lessons and educational activities perfectly suit them later on. Secondly, homeschooling
mean that there will be a great teacher-to-student ratio. The factor is
considered extremely important in education. It shows the degree of connection
present between learners and teachers as well as the care of a teacher to a
specific child. Moreover, with homeschooling, the teaching material and
environment tend to be better and more flexible. For example, when learning
about the ecosystem, student in school can only learn through book, picture or
video tape while homeschoolers can be taken to the forest to observe and touch plans
and animals along with many other activities.

On the other
hand, the positive effects of home education on children is absolutely undoubted.
