about vocabulary and they couldn’t use it properly in their daily life. the
result of that is the students felt bored and the purpose of the study in the
class is became impossible to achieve.

           In teaching activities, certain media
have a good effect in order to increase the interest of the students in the
class. One of the media that can be used is video. Video can be made by the
teacher or the teacher can find it on the internet.

In general the video has many
benefits beside attract the interest of students. Therefore, the teacher must

CHAPTER II

REVIEW
OF RELATED LITERATURE

1.
DEFINITION OF VOCABULARY MASTERY

According to (Cameron, 2001: 75) Vocabulary is one of the language aspects which should be learnt.Learning vocabulary is important because we are able to
speak, write, and listen nicely we have to know vocabulary first. A person said
to ‘know ‘ a word if they can recognize its meaning when they see it.so,
the  conclusion  was that we have to master vocabulary in
order to comprehend  and master the  4 skills in English which were speaking,
reading, writing and listening. Without vocabulary it will be hard to master
all those skills  therefore the
researcher try to  identify how to master
vocabulary with a video as a media.

2.
TECHNIQUE OF TEACHING VOCABULARY

In teaching vocabulary there are few technique
that we may apply in order to teach in order to increase the students
vocabulary mastery

According
to  scott thornbury (2002) these are the
way to teach vocabulary

1.
Teaching Word Formation and Word Combination

This kind of technique make the student to make  a new words by compound 2 kinds of word into
1 and the result is that it will create a new form of word and also a new
meaning. This also stated by scott thornbury (116) words can be formed by the
addition of prefixes and suffixes a process called affxation.

2.
A Lexical Approach

According to scott thornbury (p.112)  a lexical approach to language teaching
foregrounds vocabulary learning, both in the form of individual, high frequency
words, and in the form of word combination. This mean that this type of
technique is not only focus on one individual skills but also may help others
to learn vocabulary in a group.

3.
Teaching Lexical Chunks

This type of technique will make the students to
make their own word chunks such as “what does X mean?” and they do it on their
own and also sometimes by teacher guide. According to Scott  Thornbury(p.116) by increasing the stock of
classroom phrases, teachers can exploit the capacity of chunks to provide the
raw material for the later acquisition of grammar. It means that this type of
technique not also help the student with their vocabulary mastery but also
their grammar

4.
Teaching word  grammar

This type of technique was focusing not only on
vocabulary but also on grammar. According to scott thornbury(p.122) words that
are related in meaning to either say or tell tend to fall into one of these two
patterns. In conclusion that in order to help student’s vocabulary mastery the
teacher also need to tell them meaning in grammatically view.

5.
Teaching phrasal verbs

According to scott thornbury (p.123) phrasal verbs are
another instance of fuzziness at the boundary between words and grammar. In
this type of technique students are taught the difference between lexical
meaning and the grammatical form in a words and without the students realize it,
their vocabulary mastery was also increasing at the same time

6.
Teaching idioms

In this type of technique the students are being taught to
know the meaning of the sentence. According to scott thornbury (p.127) idioms
are difficult to understand because they are not easily unpacked. It means the
teacher have to be helpful and gives the students a help they need

3.
USING VIDEO AS A TEACHING MEDIA

In learning activities there are few aspects that we need to
have and one of them is the instrument of teaching, in this research the media
or the instrument that the researcher observe is the use of video as an
instrument to teach vocabulary mastery. According to  Berk, R. A. (2009)
(p.2) A video can have a strong effect on your mind and senses. The video has a
good benefit both for students and the teacher because both of them will have a
better way to connect in order to gain and give the knowledge in the classroom

B.         PREVIOUS STUDY

1.         THE EFFECT OF USING PLAYSTATION IN
VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 6 SAMARINDA IN
2013/2014 ACADEMIC YEAR (WRITTEN BY IBNU SIDIQ 0905085226) this study conclude
that they are a correlation between the use of playstation and the increasing
of their vocabulary mastery

2.         A STUDY ON THE STUDENTS VOCABULARY
MASTERY OF THE FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS OF SDN 020 SAMARINDA ILIR 2012/2013 (WRITTEN
BY ANASTASIA 0705085443) although this study was an descriptive research the
writer find the similarity and conclude that the theory in this research will
be helpful in order to find the result of the writer research.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

1.      RESEARCH
DESIGN

The researcher uses a simple correlational for
this research. According to William M.Trochim(2002:p26) A correlational relationship
simply says that two things perform in a synchronized manner .therefore, the writer
uses an correlational method in order to find the connection between the use of
video in teaching vocabulary and the student vocabulary comprehension

2.
POPULATION AND SAMPLE

The populations of this study are students taken from third grade
of SMPN 34 SAMARINDA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017. There are 5 class each consist
of 40 students. therefore there are 200 students in the third grade and the
sample of this study is only 8B which consist 40 students. On this research the
writer uses a simple random sampling. According to Frerichs, R.R.(2008) Subjects in
the population are sampled by a random process, using either a random number
generator or a random number table, so that each person remaining in the
population has the same probability of being selected for the sample. It means
all the subjects in the population has the same chance to be chosen as a sample
for this research

3.
DATA COLLECTION
TECHNIQUE

In order to get the
data, the researcher does these procedures:

          1. at the meeting, the researcher
taught them vocabulary by using video

2.
Students pays attention to the researcher explanations .

3.
The researcher then gives them a quesstionnare in order to get the data from
them.

4.
the researcher then asked them to give back the quesstionarre.

5.
the researcher calculate the result from the quesstionnare

4.      INSTRUMENT(S)

The
researcher using 2 instruments to
gain the data from the population there are a quesstionnare paper. video as a
media to teach and an quesstionnare which consists of 20 item of questions.

5.
DATA
ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE

The researcher
using correlation technique in order to compared the score of vocabulary
comprehension and scores of video as a teaching media. To find the correlation
among these 2 variables the researcher using Product Moment Correlation
coefficient formula.
