Colonel
Sartoris Snopes (Sarty) is the character of the story “Barn Burning,” by
William Faulkner. He is a ten-year-old boy who can make his own decision. He is
the hero of the story because he prefers protecting society more than his
family. He respects his father Abner Snopes and obeys him, example he knows that
his father is wrong still he did not spoke the truth about the Barn Burning. He
does not question when his father slapped him for no reason, he ran behind the person
calling him barn burner this type of attitude shows that he is a well-mannered child.
In the entire story, he is looking for peace and happiness which he has never received
from his own family members. Abner, his father forces him to burn barn and do
not want him to tell the truth afterward. By spending most of his time in the
listening to the court proceeding he feels that he should speak truth and help
in people getting justice. He realizes that Burning Barn of other people is not
good because he is destroying someone’s hard work and money which they have
gather for their family welfare. He knows that he is also guilt because he
helped his father burning barn. Sarty wants to serve society more than his
family. Although, he knows that his father is the only people on whom his
family is dependent upon, still he does not want his father to destroy another
people property. He warns his mother to let him go otherwise he would hit her,
although he knows that hitting his mother is wrong, he thinks that burning de
Spain barn is worse. He knows that his father is brave, and everyone should
remember him but not by the name “Barn Burner”. He does not want to be
unfaithful to his father. Being only ten-year-old he has developed a mind an
adult. At the end of the story he finds burning barns is a crime, so he informs
to de Spain about his father burning his barn. He is a hero. He made his father
and brother killed for protecting the society, because if they were alive they
could have burned more barns.
