Cyber
Security is the process designed to protect people, networks, computers,
programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access. There are many
different ways to do this including blagging, phishing, pharming and
shouldering. There are also other methods of attack and malware to hack other
people’s information. There have been 34,151 cases of fraud. We need cyber
security to protect networks, banks, large companies and people with email
addresses or any connection to the internet. Hackers can steal identities or
money from banks and shut down large online companies.

Potential
threats can be blagging, which is when a person manages to obtain something
(most likely money) by using persuasion or in an intelligent way. An example of
blagging is on the 11th of February when companies were ordered to
help a blagging inquiry. 10 companies were being ordered to co-operate with an
inquiry into the illegal “blagging” of private information. An information
commissioner said insurers, law firms and security firms had been sent demands.
The inquiry began after police said 98 companies had used private detectives to
illegally gain information including bank and phone records.

Another
threat is phishing which is when people send emails pretending to be from
companies in order to persuade other people to reveal personal information,
such as passwords and credit card numbers. An example of this is on the 13th
of December when a woman, who is 84 years old, loses £140,000 in a phone
‘phishing’ scam. The residents of Tayside had been targeted by callers
pretending to be from their banks or other business companies. The victims were
encouraged to either transfer money to another account or provide personal banking
details. Banks will never ask for personal information via mail. If anyone have
even the slightest doubt that this isn’t their bank, they can contact their
bank for clarification. Another way to prevent this is to never go to a banks
website via email.

Pharming
is the fraudulent practice of directing Internet users to a fake website that copies
the appearance of a proper one in order to get personal information such as
passwords, account numbers and other personal information. To prevent this, use
a legitimate and trusted internet service provider and install better antivirus
software.

One
last threat is shouldering which is when somebody looks over someone’s shoulder
when they are entering their pin in a cash machine. To prevent this, it is
easiest to just cover it with their hand or lean in close to cover as much as
possible.

What
we can expect in 2018 is:

·
50% of organizations increased cybersecurity
training for the security and IT staff.
More organisations are becoming aware of the seriousness of cyber security and
encouraging awareness and training in avoiding threats. Many companies are
holding briefings to spread awareness. Phishing is the one to be most aware of
so many colleagues are trying to catch each other out with phishing attacks. 91%
of cyberattacks are from phishing emails meaning the majority of hacks are by
employees clicking on emails containing some form of malware. Cybersecurity
Ventures predicts the security awareness training market will grow from $1
billion in 2014 to $10 billion by 2027.

·
49% of organizations
increased the level of cybersecurity training for non-technical employees.

·
48% of
organizations increased their cybersecurity budgets.
