Scrooge is a character who is very miserable, and a bitter old stiff. He has a strong hate towards absurd things, such as, happiness, generosity, and Christmas. He is very greedy, and has extremely high values in building and controlling his wealth, and because of his values he tends to treat others horribly. An example of this would be “Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk’s fire was so very much smaller that it looked like one coal. But he couldn’t replenish it, for Scrooge kept the coalbox in his own room; and so surely as the clerk came in with the shovel, the master predicted that it would be necessary for them to part. Wherefore the clerk put on his white comforter, and tried to warm himself at the candle; in which effort, not being a man of a strong imagination, he failed.” (Dickens, 2) So Scrooge is aware that his clerk is in discomfort but does not offer to help, as that would place Scrooge himself in discomfort. Scrooge also values his own company, and an example of that would be when he questions his nephew for getting married, “Why did you get married?’ said Scrooge. `Because I fell in love.’ `Because you fell in love!’ growled Scrooge, as if that were the only one thing in the world more ridiculous than a merry Christmas. `Good afternoon!’ `Nay, uncle, but you never came to see me before that happened. Why give it as a reason for not coming now?’ `Good afternoon,’ said Scrooge.” (Dickens, 3) Scrooge is also the only resident in his building, because he has a strong desire to be spending christmas alone. For his world views are seen as building and creating money. All else is nonsense to Scrooge. Now in the Victorian society, the comparison between Scrooge in terms of values, behaviors, and worldviews, are going to be related to the upper class and how that wealth is their number one aspect. Another aspect would be the idea of christmas, Scrooge believes that Christmas is a holiday that helps people gain popularity, and to Victorian society they would gain popularity in England.
